3 Nicest Guys in the Dragon Kin series by G.A. Aiken

There is no shortage of alpha males in romance novels, no matter what sub-genre they belong to. These men are domineering, arrogant, and always want to be in control. Behind that stern exterior is a passionate man whom we all love to read about.

This post is not about those men, though. After reading Bring the Heat, the 9th instalment in the Dragon Kin series by G.A. Aiken, it occurred to me that this series has quite a few “nice guys”. Most of them are playful instead of dominant, considerate instead of harsh, and incredibly fierce in the face of battle. I think it’s what makes the series so fun to read!

In appreciation of the “nice guys” in the series, I’ve come up with my Top 3!

Top 3 "Nice Guys" in the Dragon Kin series by G.A. Aiken

#3 Aidan the Divine

Bring the Heat by G.A. Aiken
Aidan is the hero of Bring the Heat (Dragon Kin #9), but he’s appeared numerous times in the previous books as a Mi-runach warrior. Among his team, he is the most level-headed. Or, I should say, he’s the only level-headed male there. Instead of being unruly, he keeps the peace. He discusses, rather than shouts. And, he cares a lot for his mate, Branwen the Awful, his friends, and his little sister Orla.

In Feel the Burn (Dragon Kin #8), he offers help to the Rebel King, Gaius Lucius Domitus, by bringing the king and his party to Aidan’s family home in the Western Mountains. Aidan absolutely hates his family. They are terrible people. But, he took everyone there anyway in order to fulfil their mission. Aidan is just the sort of guy I would trust to have my back.

#2 General Brastias

Dragon Actually by G.A. Aiken
The commander of Annwyl the Bloody’s army has never gotten his own book, but I’ve always admired his character. First of all, he’s been loyal to Annwyl since the beginning. It didn’t matter to him that she was a woman or that she was a bastard. He followed her to war against her father, her brother, and then against her other foes throughout the series. There was even a point where Annwyl left her soldiers to go on a suicide mission. But Brastias never lost faith in her.

On top of that, he is also courageous. He’s mated with a dragoness, Morfyd the White. In Dragon Actually (Dragon Kin #1), Brastias fell in love with Morfyd before he even knew she was a dragon. When he found out, he didn’t back away like a coward. He was steadfast against her brothers and her family, all fire-breathing dragons. He was steadfast against Morfyd herself who is more powerful than him physically and magically. Brastias may be human, but he’s one of the best men in the series for sure.

#1 Vigholf the Abhorrent

The Dragon Who Loved Me by G.A. Aiken
My favourite in the series so far is The Dragon Who Loved Me (Dragon Kin #5). Vigholf is a Lightning dragon from the Northlands. This means he’s got purple hair, purple scales, and very conservative view of women due to his culture. But that didn’t stop him from falling head over heels in love with Rhona the Fearless, a warrior dragoness from the Southlands.

He’s been fighting alongside her for 5 years, not minding that she’s a woman. All that time, he’s had a crush on her. Even going so far as to warn off other dragons from making a move on her. He watches over her even though she can clearly take care of herself. And, he brings her food. That’s a shining sign of a good guy!

Final Words

The Dragon Kin series is a fun and entertaining read, but it also has an interesting commentary on gender. The women are portrayed as warriors and the men they are paired with truly become their partners. I like that a lot about these books. Plus, all the family antics are so ridiculous I always have a good time reading (and re-reading) them.

I’d like to know, who is your favourite “nice guy” character in the series?
